Aspirations:
Apart from making
a living as a translator my main reason for wanting
to focus on German translation is to help to bring about a better
cultural understanding of Germany in the English-speaking world by
making available as much German literature in English language as
possible.
German literature
is very under appreciated in the English-speaking
world, which is a pity because a lot of it is marvellous. It
encompasses everything from swash-buckling tales written in a
straightforward manner to deep philosophical explorations that probe
the outer edges of the human experiences with great insight. There are
darkly brooding meditations on the madness and folly of war, which
contrast starkly with life affirming romantic works brimming with
colour, sound and movement. Scurrilous takes on the main chapters of
European history compete for the reader's attention with madcap
adventures or gritty real life thrillers. Altogether the depth and
definition of emotion, imagination and life committed to paper by
German writers over the centuries represents a treasure trove of human
perspectives fully deserving of the attention of the world's literati. |
